Well, November is rolling in closer–and I’ve signed up again for NaNoWriMo. I’ve already got an idea and a title to go with it. What about you? Any takers?

  1. Not me. I can’t take the pressure with all the other pressure I’ve got to take right now. I have a ton of ideas though. A metric ton. I keep promising myself I’ll do it one day, but that’s a frickin’ lie. If I do it, I’ll be shocked and probably not finish.

    Good luck though!

    1. I met one of my best friends through NaNo, and now once a year I get to meet up with other writers and have fun–time with people who like to talk about writing! And then at the end of the month it is over. There is pressure, but it is the good–the kind that makes you go woo when you get it done.

      Thanks for the luck!

  2. Speaking of NaNo, and looking at that photo, this post from the other day at Speak Coffee to Me was pretty good. 🙂 (Btw, Elaine there is an MFAer. Some of her posts each week might be of interest to you, even though she’s in Michigan and you won’t be.)

I won’t take you up on the invite (but, er, thanks for asking, ha): wouldn’t mind shooting for 50K words in a month, but it wouldn’t be for something new and, more importantly, would pretty certainly drive me crazy. I’ve written to deadline before, but it’s not something I’d volunteer for. I admire the willingness of others to subject themselves to it, though — and get a vicarious sense of accomplishment from reading the various status reports.

An idea + a title = a great start. Of course I’d love the instant gratification of knowing them both right now… but will grudgingly wait until December to find out!

    1. You’ve sent me to that blog before–it is a good one, but I haven’t been able to keep up (so many blogs, so little time). Her experience isn’t mine–though maybe the self-absorbtion…–and besides, I participate in November anyway. And our person-in-charge is nothing like the woman at that coffee shop–she explains things and we don’t use the word newbie. Well, I don’t use much of that lingo at all, but our region calls the first-timers Hatchlings because we have a penguin as our mascot. Oh, it all sounds ridiculous, but it is fun anyway. I go to write-ins to write and commiserate. I can stay home and really write. And sure much of what is written is drivel. A lot of people pad–no contractions and two part names. But for freeing the brain and letting go of perfectionism, it is a great exercise. Some people will never look at their NaNo novels again. I know people who delete the whole thing when they finish. But then some people in this world talk a lot about writing a novel and never write a word, so I don’t get to hung up on how much great art NaNo produces. That doesn’t seem the point.

You’ve got to do what gets you to write. I’ve done NaNo so many times now, it is a tradition. I look forward to knowing that I’ve got this time especially set aside for a new idea. We’ll see how it goes!

  3. you know, I’m so torn on this. I really want to do it, but I made this commitment to work on my revision of my FIRST nano novel. Blargh. I haven’t written at all lately, much upheaval and a computer that has only JUST gotten back on line. (it’s why I’ve been awol)

I am so uninspired in my poor draft, but I am getting ALL these ideas for a new story. A werewolf story. I’m leaning towards my wolf story, but really, I know I should actually FINISH something and get my first novel out there in the world.

I don’t know. LIfe is so impermanent now, maybe the short term nano is more fitting than the long term rewrite.

I think I’m going to do nano. I think it would make me happier.

  4. You already know I signed up for NaNoWriMo. I’ve just been certified masochistic.

I’ve two ideas that will most likely morph into one. What I need to do is sit my ass down and start developing my character and an outline. Since I don’t write fiction, the idea of sitting my ass down and developing a character and an outline sends me into a panic attack.

Don’t care. I’m doing it for the challenge. And, of course, to share the same web space as you. 😉
